Abstract

Between the 14th December 2009 and the 12th January 2010 Oxford Archaeology East carried out an archaeological evaluation on land proposed for an extension to Dimmock's Cote Quarry, Wicken, Cambridgeshire in advance of the planning application. The area measured 20ha and lay to the south of previous investigations conducted in between 1992 and 2008. The programme consisted of fieldwalking and evaluation trenches with a prior geophysical survey carried out by Northamptonshire Archaeology (ECB3305: Report 09/169). The evaluation identified surface scatters of earlier prehistoric flintwork and Early Iron Age pottery, an extensive area of Early Iron Age pitting cutting through an extant buried soil (protected by a medieval headland), a posthole structure of uncertain date containing fragments of lava quernstone and evidence for medieval Ridge and Furrow agriculture.
