Abstract

Oxford Archaeology carried out an archaeological investigation during work to install a new heating system, drainage, organ power supply and subsequent re-flooring within the church of St Helen's in Abingdon. The investigation demonstrated that the ground beneath the interior of the Church had been heavily disturbed by the insertion of post medieval graves and volts ant the subsequent extensive Victorian refurbishment of the church interior. The investigation uncovered the remains of the south wall of the church prior to the addition of an outer south aisle in 1539. Walling that may indicate the existence of a Chapel pre-dating the 1539 construction was noted below the present west wall of the vestry. A possible buried medieval soil was noted under the present north porch.
