Abstract

Between the 19th Feb and 5th March 1998 the Archaeological Field Unit of Cambridgeshire County Council undertook an excavation at St. Clements Passage, Huntingdon. The work was commissioned by Huntingdonshire District Council Architectural Services, on behalf of the Cambridge Housing Society Ltd., in advance of residential development on the site. Excavation revealed quarry pits, rubbish pits and deposits dating from the medieval and post-medieval periods. A clay and wood lined pit was found in a group of similar features in the northern part of the site. The considerable build up of a garden type soil suggests this area was open land to the rear of properties along the High Street until the nineteenth century.
