Abstract

Oxford Archaeology North (OA North) was commissioned by IWA Architects, on behalf of the Friends of the Victoria Pavillion, to undertake a cultural heritage deskbased assessment of the Victoria Pavilion, also known as the Winter Gardens, Morecambe, Lancashire (NGR 343096 464395). The Pavilion, which is a statutory designated Grade II* Listed Building, survives as a heavily ornamented Victorian theatre with two horseshoe-shaped balconies and eight boxes either side of the proscenium. The desk-based assessment, undertaken in February 2006, focused on the history of the Victoria Pavilion and its development within the larger Winter Gardens complex. The study included visits to the Lancashire Record Office, Morecambe Library and Lancaster Library.
