Abstract

Between January and October 2008 Oaxford Archaeology carried out an archaeological excavation and watching brief at Bonn Qsuare, Oxford on the site of the graveyard of St Peter-le-Bailey church. The excavations revealed a total of 296 burials from the graveyard, which stood on the site from the eleventh to the late nineteenth century. None of the burials were in coffins, although some were buried in stone-lined cist graves. Many of the later burials were interred in brick shaft graves. The analysis of the skeletons revealed that a large proportion of both early and later population suffered from the effects of hard labour, crowded living conditions, pollution and generally poor hygiene.
