Church of St Mary the Virgin, Kintbury, Berkshire

Hardy, Alan (1995) Church of St Mary the Virgin, Kintbury, Berkshire. Project Report. Oxford Archaeological Unit Ltd. (Unpublished)

Oxford Archaeological Unit (OAU) conducted a watching brief at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Kintbury, Berkshire, in January 1995. Work was carried out during works to underpin and buttress the NW corner of the N transept. The contractors were R.D.Smallbone Ltd of Newbury. During three visits observations were made of brick infilling and a concrete layer which may represent previous attempts to manage subsidence problems. The similarity of brick type seen in the infilling to that of the bricks used to construct the S transept in the 18th century would suggest the work was carried out at the same time although the concrete slab is thought to be from 20th century. A further area of exposed wall was given a suggested date as being part of the original 13th century structure. A single burial was revealed with coffin fittings which indicate a early-mid 19th century date. The bones were probably disturbed during the construction of the brick vaults.
